Australia passes social media ban for children under 16.

Post by Ojisama » 28 Nov 2024, 22:30

The law forces tech giants from Instagram and Facebook owner Meta to TikTok to stop minors logging in or face fines of up to A$49.5 million ($32 million). A trial of methods to enforce it will start in January with the ban to take effect in a year.

Countries including France and some US states have passed laws to restrict access for minors without a parent's permission, but the Australian ban is absolute. A full under-14s ban in Florida is being challenged in court on free speech grounds.

Platforms which don't require you start an account (eg YouTube) are exempt from the law, which won't come into force for at least 12 months.

Government agencies will now start trials into establishing a robust Age Verification Technology.

Thoughts anybody?

i don't know how they'll implement this, honestly

either way, if it works, it doesn't make a huge dent in most social media, but i WILL say that socmed is bad for most kids 'cause it supposedly rots the dopamine centers of the brain via instant gratification and there's loads of mean people on social media that wouldn't think twice about bullying kids

Like I said on another forum I post on, it's literally unenforceable, Parents don't have the time to watch what the kids are doing online 24/7, if little Jimmy signs up for a Facebook account under age, there's almost nothing they can do about it.
I don't beee-lieve it!
