Last Exile

In a world that looks like the 19th century with anti-gravity devices, Claus and Lavie are pilot and co-pilot of a Vanship and act as couriers. They become involved with a mysterious mission after rescuing a little girl from a strange star-shaped killing machine. Not willing to let the girl die, they complete the mission by delivering her to the legendary mercenary ship Sylvana, only to become part of the crew as fighter pilots.

I'm rewatching this after 6-8 years since I last saw it. I first saw it when it was airing on TV (2004 apparently), and was one of the first anime I'd watched.

If anyone hasn't seen this, they should. Artistically, it's incredible. The background art, character art, and mechanical art--even the 3D work--is all really impressive. It's technically 2003, but the art quality is a decade ahead of its time. The music is amazing too. The imaginative setting is in a league of its own, and it's a very good story as well. 26 episodes.

I've seen both the dub and the sub. The dub is good as well.

It seems Princess Principal borrowed heavily from this series, am I right?

OH! You started watching anime in 2004? Based on you knowledge I thought you started in the 90s.

I'll add this anime to my list as it seems like something I might like. Thank you!

Maybe 2002 or 2003, I don't really know. I have a terrible memory. But I didn't really focus on anime as a separate media until I saw this, so I generally count it as what got me into anime.

I've always considered the 90's to be anime's best decade though.

Hmm after 3 episodes, I'm wondering if the dub is actually better.

Something about the video doesn't render as well on my crunchyroll app, too. I used to own the DVD set. That was better quality.
I'm gonna download the rest instead.

I was wrong about the dub being better. After the first few episodes, the original voices are good.

I got to an anime store yesterday and they had a sale! Mmmm. And yes, Last Exile the complete series DVD was one of them. I've only managed to watch this about half-way through.

I finished rewatching it.
That is unequivocally a great anime.

I never got through much of Last Exile: Ginyoku no Fam. Maybe I'll watch that now.

I always feel so sorry for Lucciola, fighting his way to Delphine.

I'm sure I posted a Last Exile thread years ago.

Is it just for the first one or both of them?
